When Door Locks Go Nuts
Recently my mom told me about a series of houses being burglarized and it got me to thinking about how secure and safe my home was.
We all can agree the locks on our home’s doors are one of the most crucial components of our house’s security and because our locks were over 15 years old I undertook a little research mission on home locks and how safe mine were.
What I discovered was kind of frightening. The standard tumbler lock is still the most popular lock in the US and sadly is also one of the most prone to picking, vandalism and “bumping” which is a popular technique so simple to master a kid with Internet access can learn to do it by themselves.
Think I’m not serious? Just watch this video and you will see what I mean…
By now I can guess how you most likely feel as I felt the same way…
“I was concerned for my family’s safety!!!”

It was this and a few other factors that got me to finally decide to look for a new lock that would be one I could count on. Since I had done some initial research I felt that the following characteristics would be very important in making any choice:
- Simple to install
- 100% pick proof
- More than one way to open the lock
- Durable
- Doesn’t cost an arm and a leg
I found a web site that had some informative posts here: electronic locks. Maybe it will help you also but in summary here is what I found…
The lock I decided on after spending I don’t know how many hours researching locks (I’m very thorough when I am thinking about purchasing something) was the AP501 from Sunnect. This was primarily based on a 7 page write-up by The National Locksmith magazine that concluded…
“The Sunnect electronic door lock is a very impressive product. It’s the first stand alone door lock I have seen in a long time that really took a completely different approach in its lock design. It is built like a tank, is a dream to install and operate, and for what you get, has a price point that will make anyone smile. If you do any kind of stand alone lock installations, you owe it to yourself and your potential customers to take a look at the Sunnect product. I think if you do, you will be as impressed with this product as I am, and I can assure you that this one I’m keeping.“
This door lock is far superior than other door locks I looked into because of all of the capabilities such as…
Digital technology (Patent-pending) features keyless entry with weatherized backlit keypad, decoy digits entry method (random digits can be keyed before the valid code) to curtail memorization of your code, auto locking on exit, loud intruder alarm and master function
The lock’s key parts (motor, batteries, computer chips) mounted on the inside of the door to protect against weather and vandalism
Simple 3-step code registration process (3 – 20 digits) and 100% digital keys (up to 20 keys and 1 master key) and quick and safe deletion of any lost or misplaced keys
2 digital keys and 4 AA batteries, visual and audible low-battery warning and a 9 Volt external temporary power terminal in case of a complete battery discharge
Special bypass circuitry to protect against high-voltage attacks
Quality tested 200,000 times which approximates 54 years of opening and closing a door ten times a day under extreme weather and temperature conditions
Built to resist sawing, hammering, drilling and even a bullet
I have never seen a door lock that could be shot at and still function and to me that just reinforced my decision!!!
After shopping around I decided that the best overall deal was at Amazon.com since I have bought many items from them and I have never had an issue with an order. Most of the time they have the best price and they offer free shipping as well and returning stuff is so simple as well.
Just in case you are getting new door locks I have posted a link to the Sunnect AP501SN page on Amazon so you can learn more about this high tech lock.
